ChatGPT Home Services: Passive Data Feeds vs. Active Apps

When home service businesses ask about ChatGPT visibility, the conversation typically goes to directories, reviews, and schema. What rarely gets explained is that ChatGPT now has multiple distinct layers for surfacing local businesses -- and they work completely differently. Being present in one does not mean you're present in the others.

Our methodology research has spent the last several months documenting how these layers work. What emerged -- particularly from investigations filed in Scout sessions 95 and 105 (August 2 and August 12, 2026) -- is a framework that changes how home services businesses should prioritize their fix sequence.

The passive data layer: what shows up automatically

When a ChatGPT user types "find me a plumber in Austin" or "best HVAC company near me," ChatGPT does not begin by searching the web. It queries a set of structured data partnerships first, assembling a candidate pool of local businesses before any web retrieval happens.

Three confirmed partnerships currently feed this passive layer for home services:

**Foursquare (December 2024 partnership).** Foursquare's location intelligence database -- covering 100 million+ points of interest -- is a direct data source for ChatGPT local responses. Our investigation from Scout session 80 (July 17, 2026) documented the mechanism: 60-70% of ChatGPT local results originate from Foursquare's POI database. A business not listed on Foursquare is structurally absent from standard ChatGPT local queries regardless of its website quality, review count, or schema implementation.

**Thumbtack (October 2025 partnership).** Our session 96 investigation (August 3, 2026) flagged this as a vault gap: Thumbtack integrated directly with ChatGPT in October 2025 via OpenAI's Apps SDK. When ChatGPT detects a home-related query in standard chat, Thumbtack professionals are surfaced via API within the conversation -- not through a sidebar app users must open. Thumbtack's 300,000+ service providers appear as part of standard ChatGPT response behavior. This integration predated the Thumbtack+Claude partnership by six months and the Yelp+ChatGPT partnership by nine months, and was not in our vault until session 96.

**Yelp (July 2026 partnership).** On July 23, 2026, Yelp signed a data licensing agreement with OpenAI covering 330 million reviews and 8 million+ business listings. Our methodology update from Scout session 95 (August 2, 2026) reflects the immediate impact: Yelp was elevated to Priority-1 in our ChatGPT fix plan, co-equal with Foursquare. Before July 23, ChatGPT cited Yelp organically from training data -- the same way it cited BBB or Angi. After July 23, Yelp data feeds ChatGPT directly via structured API. Yelp profile completeness, review presence, and star rating are now structural signals in the passive layer, not organic ones.

These three integrations are passive. A business listed on Foursquare, Thumbtack, and Yelp surfaces in standard ChatGPT local responses without any user action beyond asking the query.

The transactional evolution: Yelp goes beyond data

The Yelp integration is not static. Our session 104 investigation (August 11, 2026) documented that on August 10, 2026, Yelp and OpenAI launched Yelp Reservations and Waitlist directly inside ChatGPT. Restaurant users can now book a table or join a waitlist without leaving the ChatGPT interface.

This is part of a staged rollout:

- Phase 1 (July 23, 2026): Yelp reviews, ratings, photos, and business listing data in ChatGPT responses - Phase 2 (August 10, 2026): Yelp Reservations and Waitlist for restaurants, in-ChatGPT - Phase 3 (pending): Yelp "Request a Quote" for home services contractors

Phase 3 -- which would let homeowners request contractor quotes directly inside ChatGPT -- has not launched. All sources continue to use forward-looking language and no launch date has been announced. But the roadmap is executing step by step. The businesses with complete, review-dense Yelp profiles now are the ones positioned for the lead generation layer when it goes live.

For home services clients, there are now two reasons to fix Yelp: citation presence in the passive data layer today, and conversion funnel position when Phase 3 ships.

The active layer: the Angi ChatGPT app

Our session 105 investigation (August 12, 2026) identified another vault gap: on March 4, 2026, Angi launched an official app inside the ChatGPT Apps sidebar.

Here is the distinction that matters: this is not a data feed.

The Angi app is invoked only when a user deliberately opens it from ChatGPT's sidebar menu. A user who types "find me a plumber" into the standard ChatGPT chat interface does not trigger the Angi app. The app surfaces contractor recommendations when users explicitly search for home service help inside the app itself, then redirects them to Angi's platform to complete a quote request or hire a pro.

Compare this to Thumbtack's integration. Thumbtack professionals appear in standard ChatGPT chat responses when home-related queries are detected -- no user action required beyond asking the question.

The sources we reviewed for session 105 describe this distinction in terms of integration depth: Thumbtack's press materials emphasize being "powered by ChatGPT" in a way suggesting deeper embedding into the standard response flow; Angi's describe an "app in the sidebar" flow that users open as a separate step. The distinction is confirmed; the precise technical mechanism underlying it is medium confidence, not definitively documented.

How we now categorize these integrations

Our methodology update from Scout sessions 95-105 (updated August 12, 2026) establishes two tiers:

**Priority 1 -- automatic data feed integrations (passive citation layer).**

Foursquare (December 2024): POI database feeds ChatGPT local results when standard local queries fire. Thumbtack (October 2025): home services marketplace integrated into standard ChatGPT responses for home-related queries. Yelp (July 2026): 330 million reviews and 8 million+ listings via data licensing, passively surfaced when local queries fire.

**Priority 2 -- active integrations and strong organic citation sources.**

Angi (March 2026): ChatGPT Apps sidebar app requiring explicit user invocation, plus the #2 organic training-data citation source for home services in the Foundation/AirOps Q4 2025 dataset (28.5 million AI responses). BBB: #1 organic training-data citation source for home services in that same dataset.

The fix plan implication is direct. A home services business should complete the Priority-1 passive layer first. The Priority-2 tier improves presence in specific contexts -- users who actively open the Angi app, and training-data-sourced responses where Angi and BBB have historically ranked high -- but it operates on a smaller slice of total ChatGPT query volume.

Why the ordering matters

Before the Foursquare, Thumbtack, and Yelp partnerships were confirmed as data feeds rather than organic citations, the ChatGPT fix guidance was broadly "be on directories, get reviews." The passive-vs-active distinction did not exist as a diagnostic category.

It now does, and it changes what a business should fix first.

A home services business on Foursquare, Thumbtack, and Yelp is in the passive candidate pool for the vast majority of home service queries that reach ChatGPT. A business with a complete Angi profile but no Foursquare claim is well-positioned for the active invocation funnel -- users who open the Angi sidebar app -- but absent from the passive layer that handles standard queries.

SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, covering 350,000 locations across 2,751 brands, found that only 1.2% of locations receive any ChatGPT recommendation across the full dataset. The businesses in that 1.2% are predominantly positioned in the passive data layer. The data feed is the access point to ChatGPT recommendations, not the app.

Angi belongs in the fix plan -- it is a meaningful citation source and a high-intent conversion channel. But it belongs after Foursquare, Thumbtack, and Yelp are complete.

The action sequence

For home services businesses working through this:

Claim and complete your Foursquare listing at app.foursquare.com/venue/claim. Accurate business name, address, phone, and category. A $20 fee gets instant management access; otherwise verification is slower. This is the upstream database for the majority of ChatGPT local results.

Complete your Thumbtack profile at thumbtack.com/pro. Include all service categories, service area, and pricing range. A minimum of 5 reviews builds the profile depth that feeds into the API response. This is a direct structural signal into ChatGPT's home services query layer.

Build your Yelp presence -- reviews, complete categories, accurate NAP. Yelp data now feeds ChatGPT directly. Profile completeness and review volume are structural signals in the passive layer. They also position you for the Request a Quote integration when Phase 3 ships, which transforms Yelp from a citation surface into a lead generation funnel inside ChatGPT.

Optimize your Angi profile as a secondary action. Angi is the #2 organic citation source for home services in ChatGPT training data and has a sidebar app converting high-intent homeowners who actively seek it. Complete it, keep the categories and service area accurate, and build reviews. But do it after the passive layer is covered.
