Where Reddit Citations Actually Land Now
Most of the advice about Reddit as an AI citation signal was written when ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode all behaved roughly the same way toward Reddit content. That's no longer true. The platform routing has split sharply as of August 2026, and the practical implications depend almost entirely on which AI surface you're trying to reach.
ChatGPT Has Effectively Left the Building
ChatGPT Search cited Reddit in approximately 3.83% of responses through early August 2026. On August 14, that share fell to approximately 0.52% -- an 86.4% drop in one week, documented by Promptwatch's citation tracker and confirmed independently by Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal.
We covered the mechanism in a separate post. The short version: on August 8, ChatGPT changed its internal query fanout from open-web retrieval to explicit `site:` routing toward known domain partners. Reddit is open-web and doesn't fit the site-specific routing pattern. It fell out.
An August 23 spot test tracking 100 identical prompts across five AI engines captured ChatGPT at 2 out of 100 responses citing Reddit. That's not a low number. That's a functional zero.
No recovery mechanism is visible. OpenAI hasn't reversed the August 8 fanout change, and there's no indication they plan to. Any AEO fix plan that positions Reddit as a ChatGPT citation lever, written after August 14, 2026, is working from outdated assumptions.
Perplexity Moved the Opposite Direction
While ChatGPT vacated the Reddit space, Perplexity went the other way.
Pierview tracked 44,488 Reddit citations across AI platforms from July 1 through August 19, 2026. Perplexity held 71% of them. ChatGPT held 23%. Perplexity's Reddit citations "roughly doubled from July into early August and kept climbing" per the Pierview dataset -- a trajectory that held even as the Reddit/Perplexity lawsuit intensified and even after Reddit blocked AI crawlers entirely in its robots.txt on August 20.
The reason Perplexity's citation rate held is mechanical. Perplexity operates two distinct crawlers. PerplexityBot, its indexing crawl, respects robots.txt and will stop re-indexing blocked pages over time. Perplexity-User, its live-query fetcher that fires during actual user searches, explicitly ignores robots.txt -- confirmed in Perplexity's own March 2026 help center documentation. The live fetcher is the mechanism sustaining Reddit citations in real answers. robots.txt doesn't touch it.
Our platform routing methodology research (filed August 30, 2026, after Scout session 123) put Perplexity's response frequency at 47 out of 100 in the August 23 spot test -- stable or only slightly reduced from the Pierview pre-block trajectory. Reddit remains active in Perplexity answers.
Google AI Mode Is Also Citing Reddit -- and Most People Don't Know It
The same August 23 spot test measured Google AI Mode at 50 out of 100 responses citing Reddit. That's roughly comparable to Perplexity's 47/100 and dramatically above ChatGPT's 2/100.
This is consistent with a structural change Google made to AI Mode on May 6, 2026: two new named sections -- "Expert Advice" and "Community Perspectives" -- both sourced from Reddit and forum content via live retrieval. These aren't incidental results that Reddit happened to rank for. They're explicitly designed sections that pull user-generated community content. Reddit is a primary input.
Google uses its own crawl infrastructure for this retrieval. It's not affected by Perplexity's robots.txt situation or the Reddit/Perplexity lawsuit. Google already has a paid Reddit data licensing deal (as does OpenAI), so its access is on a different legal footing entirely.
In our platform routing rec, we documented this finding as a confirmation that AI Mode should be treated as a Reddit citation surface co-equal with Perplexity, not as a background footnote. The practical implication: Reddit presence now connects to two meaningful AI surfaces -- Perplexity and Google AI Mode -- rather than three. ChatGPT is not in that group.
The Lawsuit Is a Real Durability Risk for Perplexity
Perplexity's Reddit advantage is contested. On July 31, 2026, U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer (SDNY) predominantly denied Perplexity's motion to dismiss in the Reddit v. Perplexity lawsuit. The case moves to discovery.
Discovery matters here because Perplexity-User -- the live fetcher sustaining the ~47/100 citation rate -- is the technical mechanism at issue. Reddit's DMCA anti-circumvention claims survived dismissal. The court held that Google's SearchGuard (robots.txt enforcement infrastructure) constitutes a DMCA-protected technical measure. If that logic holds, Perplexity-User's deliberate robots.txt-ignoring behavior could be characterized as circumvention, not just a terms-of-service dispute.
Two forward scenarios from our August 30 methodology rec:
Settlement with licensing is the higher-probability path if discovery costs escalate -- analogous to the licensing deals OpenAI and Google each signed with Reddit separately. A settlement would formally restore Perplexity access and make the current citation rate more durable.
An adverse ruling or injunction specifically targeting Perplexity-User's live-fetching would collapse Perplexity's Reddit citation rate quickly. That scenario is real, particularly now that discovery can compel Perplexity to document the fetcher's architecture.
Any client-facing language about Perplexity Reddit advantage should include the caveat: current-state finding as of August 2026, pending lawsuit outcome.
Why Local Service Businesses Should Mostly Ignore This
Reddit's new platform routing -- Perplexity and AI Mode absorbing what ChatGPT dropped -- doesn't change the calculation for local home services, trades, or healthcare practices.
Our June 2026 methodology rec established the reasoning that still holds: Reddit community presence for a local plumber or HVAC contractor is not infrastructure -- it's a 6-18 month community management effort with no discrete completion state. The Pierview data covers general AI queries across platforms, not local contractor recommendation queries specifically. When someone asks Perplexity "who's the best electrician in Hamilton," the answer draws from directories, GBP data, and review platforms. It doesn't draw from r/HomeImprovement.
The urgency restored to Reddit as a Perplexity signal applies to businesses that already have an organic Reddit footprint: a SaaS product discussed in r/devops, a consumer brand with active category subreddit coverage, a B2B service with niche community presence. For those businesses, Perplexity is now the platform where that footprint carries weight, and AI Mode is a secondary surface worth monitoring.
Building Reddit presence from zero, for a local service business, as an AI citation strategy -- that remains outside what any Sourcepull fix plan recommends.
The Practical Routing Decision
If you're managing AI visibility and Reddit is part of a client's existing web footprint, the platform assignment now looks like this:
**ChatGPT**: Reddit is not a lever. Citation rate confirmed at approximately 2% post-August 14. No fix plan action.
**Perplexity**: Reddit is the primary community signal for Perplexity. A business with organic Reddit mentions has a Perplexity-specific edge as of August 2026. Route Reddit-related audit findings to the Perplexity section, not the ChatGPT section. Flag the lawsuit durability caveat explicitly.
**Google AI Mode**: Reddit matters at roughly the same response frequency as Perplexity. AI Mode uses Google's own retrieval infrastructure -- more durable than Perplexity's position and less legally contested. For clients with Reddit presence, include AI Mode alongside Perplexity as a Reddit citation surface.
The change is not that Reddit stopped mattering for AI visibility. It's that the platform carrying Reddit citations has shifted. If you're still framing Reddit recommendations as a ChatGPT fix, you're solving for a surface that's already moved on.
Sourcepull's Signal Check shows you which sources each AI platform is actually drawing from when it responds to queries about your business. If Reddit is part of your footprint, you'll see whether it's translating into Perplexity and AI Mode citations -- or whether the signal is reaching no one.
